Distractions
As I entered 2024, my desire for a change from previous years led me to rediscover an old journal from four years ago.
Delving into its pages, I aimed to revisit the thoughts and emotions I had experienced back then, intending to draw comparisons with my current state. Anticipating an interesting journey, I was eager to see the evolution.
My journaling journey commenced in 2020, initiated by a motivational deck of cards containing daily prompts. One such prompt, dated January 13, 2020, asked,
“Where have you been getting distracted?”
Reflecting on this question, I admitted that I often found myself distracted by negative and unfounded stories replaying in my mind. While journaling had significantly reduced this mental replay, fatigue, and diminished focus occasionally allowed those old thoughts to resurface. My determination to break free from this distraction was clear—I no longer wished to be held captive by unproductive thoughts.
Fast forward to 2024, and I can confidently assert that I now experience far fewer distractions and maintain a heightened focus on my goals. The impact of that question from four years ago lingered, prompting me to break the cycle of repetitive negative thinking. Recognizing the need for change, I actively worked on minimizing the recurrence of old scripts in my head. It was, and still is, a challenging endeavor, but embracing new narratives gradually diminishes the influence of the outdated stories I used to tell myself.
Though there are still moments when distractions rear their head, dealing with them has become far more manageable compared to earlier years. Addressing distractions has become an intentional and disciplined practice, allowing me to swiftly realign with my objectives. Recently I was watching an episode of the TV show Abbott Elementary and one of the characters said;
A dream can be a distraction as easy as it can be a goal.
